World Cancer Day: Health Min says cancer curable if detected, treated early

New Delhi, Feb 4 (IEHealth) Union Health Minister JP Nadda on World Cancer Day on Monday said cancer is curable if detected and treated in time.

Through a picture message posted on Twittter, Mr Nadda said, ”Cancer is curable if detected and treated early. Look for early symptoms of cancer and consult a doctor.”

”Steps taken by government to combat cancer include setting up of 35 State Cancer Institutes screening of population above 30 years of age. National Cancer Institute, Jhajjar Treatment of Cancer under Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana,” the Minister added.

”Non-Communicable Diseases clinics at 548 Department of Healths and 2,591 Community Health Centres have also been set-up,” said he.

World Cancer Day is organised by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) and celebrated each year on February 4.

World Health Organisation (WHO) in its recently released data on Cancer said, ”Cancers are among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide, responsible for 18.1 million new cases and 9.6 million deaths in 2018.”

”Pain is experienced by 55 per cent of patients undergoing anti-cancer treatment and by 66 per cent of patients who have advanced, metastatic, or terminal disease. This can be relieved in most cases through medicines and other treatments,” it added.

The WHO also said the goal of cancer pain management is to relieve pain to a level that allows for an acceptable quality of life. The last set of WHO guidelines focused on cancer pain management were issued in 1996.
