UN chief applaudes leaders, state for ‘peaceful and orderly’ polls

United Nations, Jan 9 (IECurrentAffairs) UN Secretary-General António Guterres has applauded all those who have contributed to the “peaceful and orderly’ polls for the Presidential Election of Madagascar.

Andry Rajoelina was declared the as winner.

“The Independent Electoral Commission (CENI) and the High Constitutional Court (HCC), civil society and religious leaders, as well as the leadership of the Government”, should be “commended for being part of this historic milestone,’ UN said in a statement on Tuesday.

Mr Rajoelina(44) won by more than 55 per cent votes.

‘ The Secretary-General notes the announcement of the final results…and congratulates President-elect Andry Rajoelina,’ said the statement. ‘He also commends all stakeholders for the peaceful and orderly conclusion of the presidential election,’

Madagascar is located off the coast of southeast Africa.
