UK’s May to meet with EU Commission Chief in bid to break Brexit deadlock

London, Feb 7 (IECurrentAffairs) UK Prime Minister Theresa May will travel to Brussels on Thursday, where she will meet with President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker to discuss the United Kingdom’s divorce deal.

According to the prime minister’s representative, May will seek to negotiate alternative proposals for the provision on Irish border backstop, which has been the stumbling block in Brussels-London negotiations and prevented the draft withdrawal agreement from being passed by the UK parliament.

In January, the UK parliament rejected the draft withdrawal deal agreed by May and EU negotiators and later voted for an amendment urging a replacement to a controversial Irish border backstop. The European Union has repeatedly stressed that the draft agreement was not open for renegotiation
