The team of GoaChronicle.com and IndianExpose.com through its research arm ProtectCore have conducted a study over the last 3 months on the nature of crimes committed by religious leaders – Nuns, Priests, Pastors, Bishop and Archbishop – from the Christian community in India and those of Indian origin living abroad.
The focus was on crimes between 2014 till 2019 (January).
These crimes have been registered with police authorities across different states in India. Some of these cases have been reported in media.
Our study highlighted that there were a 96 cases registered against clergy of Christian faith in India and a shocking 8 by clergy of India origin outside the country in United States of America and United Kingdom.
Of the crimes committed, the study revealed that 80 per cent of the crimes committed by the clergy were of sexual abuse.
In the total of 83 cases of sexual abuse of the 104 cases: We further investigated to find out, that 56 of the sexual abuse cases were against minors between the age of 5 to 17 years.
27 cases were sexual abuses committed on adults by clergy in India and Indian-origin clergy abroad.
The youngest girl of 5 years of age was raped by a Pastor Charuk Oraon in Jharkhand.
Another nine-year old girl was allegedly raped by Raju Kokken, a 40-year-old Catholic priest at Saint Paul’s Church in Thaikkattussery in Thrissur in Kerala.
In another case, a 65-year-old priest Father Devaraj was arrested under POCSO Act for allegedly sexually abusing a 10-year old inside a church in Kerala.
Another 65-year-old priest Fr Basil Kuriakose in Kochi was arrested under POCSO Act on charges of sexually abusing an 11-year-old boy. He entered the dormitory in the boy’s hostel in the night and sexually abused the boy, as no other children were present due to Christmas holidays.
Of the total number of sexually abused minors 12 were between the age of 5 and 10 and 44 were between the ages 11 and 17.
Of the total number of sexual abuses reported on clergy in Indian and Indian-origin clergy abroad 72 were females and 11 were males (oldest age being 15-year old)
Globally, the Christian faith is facing a crisis on account of growing reportage of sexual abuse cases, which previously remained covered up.
Now however, victims and their families are fighting sexual predators in the clergy and are coming forward to share the horrific and sad tales of sexual abuse.
