Rajasthan Assembly Results – Congress set to stage comeback, to meet on Wednesday to elect leader

Jaipur, Dec 11 (IECurrentAffairs) The newly-elected Congress Legislature Party will meet here on Wednesday to take up the exercise of electing it’s leader to become the next Chief Minister of Rajasthan.

As per the latest updates from the office of Chief Electoral Officer, the Indian National Congress has so far won 69 of the 199 seats and has decisive leads in another 29, thus hovering close to the 100 majority mark.

The meeting will be held here at 1100 hrs tomorrow, All India Congress Committee general secretary Avinash Pandey and party central observer K C Venugopal told the media this evening in the presence of party state president Sachin Pilot and former state Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot.
As per the general practice, the CLP will adopt a resolution to authorise the party president Rahul Gandhi to choose its leader.
However, before reverting back to the party chief, Messrs Venugopal and Pandey will meet every newly-elected MLA individually to seek his or her choice for the CLP leader.
“This is our set practice, after discussing collectively the issue at the CLP meeting and seek individual view of the legislators and prominent state leaders and then later in afternoon on Wednesday, the CLP will meet again to finalise the proceeding,” according to Messrs Pandey and Venugopal.
In a bid to avoid “undue uncertainty” over the issue of CLP leader, the party has taken up the exercise even before declaration of results on all the seats.
Responding to queries from media persons later, Mr Gehlot also said the issue of CLP leader will be decided very soon, may be tomorrow itself.
He averred that since the serious setback to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his party in his home state Gujarat during assembly polls last year, the mood of the nation continued to be against him and surely in the favour of Congress chief Mr Gandhi.
Mr Gehlot was in charge general secretary of Gujarat during the crucial polls last year.
