No time limit to report a sexual abuse complaint: Maneka Gandhi

New Delhi, Oct 8 (IENews) Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi today urged women to open up about sexual harassment as no time limit can be put on cases of child sex abuse,

She said she has asked the Law Ministry to not keep any age limit to report child sexual abuse, allowing people to complain about what has happened to them even “10-15 years later” as anger at the molestation and sexual abuse never faded.

Gandhi also said she is “very happy” that the #MeToo campaign has started in India and encouraged women to come forward to complain against sexual harassment.

“Under the Code of Criminal Procedure, child sexual abuse or other offences should be reported within three years. Section 473 of the CrPC said a court may take cognisance of an older case if the “delay has been explained properly,” Gandhi expressed.

The victim would always remember the person who molested them, she said, adding that her ministry had written to the Union law ministry that one should be allowed to complain without any time limit.

At the same time, she hastened to caution anyone using the #MeToo movement to “target people who have offended in some way” or that it went out of control.
