Modi Govt has caused considerable damage to Democratic structure: Cong leaders

New Delhi, Dec 1(IECurrentAffairs) Charging the Narendra Modi government of destroying institutions and making attempts to change the Constitution, Senior Congress leaders on Friday said a considerable damage had been caused in the last four and a half years to the Democratic system and the economic structure of the country.

Participating in a panel discussion on ‘Is India being redefined, organised by the ll india Professionals congress, senior Congress leader P Chidambaram, Kapil Sibal, Salman Khurshid, manish Tewari, Abhishek mani Singhvi, Shashi tharoor and Sushmita Dev expressed concerns over the present government ‘diluting’ secularism in the country and its attempts to destroy institutions that form the foundation of the Democracy.

Speaking during a panel discussion , the Congress leaders alleged that the BJP regime was creating an atmosphere of fear in the country through attempts to dilute the spirit of secularism laid down by the Constitution.

Charging the BJP and the RSS of attempting to destroy institutions, senior Congress leader and former Law Minister Kapil Sibal said,’the BJP and RSS hv taken over the government. When Congress was in power , there was a difference between the Government and the party. Things changed in 2014 . Now Government is the party. So party decides what will be the policies.

So, Governors and Vice chancellors should be RSS people. If you want an agency like CBI to run you must ensure that person incharge is a sympathizer of party. Be it CBI, ED or NIA, all are controlled by RSS. History is being redefined . Governors in various states and speakers in assemblies want to make sure they help the party form a government in state. Governors and Speakers behave in this manner, it tells us that the state has been diminished.’

Charging the NDA of having stifled freedom of expression of the press,Mr Manish Tewari alleged that the current government has an arm twisting attitude towards the freedom of media which was not good for democracy.

He said that the cardinal principle for good democracy was free media.

Speaking about the situation of women in the country , the president of the All India Mhila Congress Sushmita Dev alleged.that the attitude towards women of the current regime was also RSS inspired, Ms Deb alleged.

Taking a dig at one of the government’s scheme that is the Ujjwala yojana , she said that instead of relating cooking gas to clean energy , they linked it to kitchen , which clearly reflects their mindset , about women.

The session was moderated by AIPC chairman Shashi Tharoor.
