MJ Akbar appears before Delhi Court to record statement in criminal defamation case

New Delhi, Oct 31 (IENews) Former Union minister M J Akbar on Wednesday appeared before a Delhi Court to record his statement in a criminal defamation case filed by him against journalist Priya Ramani, who has accused Akbar of sexual misconduct around 20 years ago.

Akbar appeared before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) Samar Vishal and said that Ramani has “wilfully, deliberately, intentionally and maliciously” made defamatory imputations against him on social media.

Akbar has also submitted that false narrative against the complainant is being circulated in a motivated manner for the fulfilment of an agenda.

Akbar further submitted through his defamation complained that Ramani has not only damaged his goodwill and reputation in his social circle but also affected his reputation in the community, friends, family and colleagues and caused irreparable loss and tremendous distress.

Akbar through his defamation complained seeks from the court to issuance of notice to Ramani under section 499 (defamation) and section 500 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Priya Ramani, Ghazala Wahab, Shuma Raha, Anju Bharti and Shutapa Paul are the women who have accused Akbar of sexual harassment.

Name of the Akbar was cropped up on social media when he was in Nigeria.
