Kochi, Oct 3 (IENews) The Kerala High Court, today, rejected the bail plea of Bishop Franco Mulakkal.
The accused rapist was arrested on charges of raping, sodomising and confining a 44-year old nun 13 times between 2014 and 2016.
The High Court relied on prima facie evidence against the Bishop in the case to deny bail.
Bishop Franco Mulakkal is the first Bishop in India to be arrested on rape charges.
Fourteen Christian organisations in Kerala and a few nuns from the Missionaries of Jesus congregation, who were supporting the victim nun in her fight for justice, protested for a period 14-days at the Vanchi square, before Kerala police decided to arrest the accused Bishop.
The Vatican has relieved the Bishop from his pastoral duties temporarily, on the accused Bishop’s request to be relieved to assist the police in its investigations but it completely ignored the pleas of the raped nun seeking justice.
