India’s Top Fitness Model Karan Oberoi Says No to Steroid Abuse

(IEEntertainment) In the world of fitness modelling, Karan Oberoi is a name that is uttered quite often. As a Delhi lad who came from an academic family, becoming the face on the covers of highly popular and respected health magazines in the country was a far-fetched idea. Yet, that’s where his unlikely journey led him and today he is one of the topmost fitness models in the country.

His Instagram follower count is soon to touch the very coveted 1 million mark. His fan base has been built on his popularity in the health and fitness circles. Popularity that came to him gradually and after a whole lot of dedication and hard work. To become a fitness model, the list requirements is harsher and a lot longer than for regular models. Diet and nutrition tend to be strict and results are slow but long-lasting. The commitment to being a fitness model involves high stakes. In the case of Karan Oberoi, this means no vices of any kind – cigarettes, alcohol and junk food are a strict no-no. He works out every day and runs every other day. Of course, his biggest claim to fame is that his body has been built entirely naturally, with absolutely no steroid use ever.

What are steroids?

Anabolic-androgenic steroids, better known as anabolic steroids are synthetically created variations of the male sex hormone testosterone. Anabolic means ‘muscle-building’ and androgenic is associated with increased male sex characteristics. Testosterone is a naturally occurring male sex hormone that is responsible for muscle growth. Using testosterone and other similar steroidal androgens therefore accelerate muscle growth. This is the reason why anabolic steroids are mostly misused by male weightlifters in the age range of 20-35.

The Detrimental Effects of Steroids

Naturally, the use of any synthetic substance to aid bodybuilding is bound to have side effects. Some of the major side-effects are balding, increased aggressiveness, development of male mammary glands giving rise to what is known as ‘manboobs’, reduced libido and even anxiety in some cases. They provide short-term results but increase the risk of disorders in the long run.

Karan’s Stance on Steroids

Karan has been a vehement non-supporter of using anabolic steroids for fitness reasons. According to him, “when an athlete resorts to using steroids it is still understandable, since they do it to enhance their own performance, but for a fitness model to use it just so that he ‘looks’ great all-year round, is neither a sustainable nor healthy process”. Karan has built his lean and muscular frame entirely the natural way, a process that took him a better part of a decade. This, he believes, is the reason why he has managed to stay on top of the game.

“There are plenty of natural supplements like Glutamine, BCAA (Branded-Chain Amino Acids) and Protein Shake that can safely be used for muscle growth, steroids is not the answer”, Karan states. His regimental diet and exercise routine includes a daunting meal plan and regular workouts specific to his body type. “The only way to ensure that your body is always camera ready is eating well and taking care of yourself. Your body is a temple and it must be treated that way.” Karan says.

“At the end of the day just for the 1% glamour quotient you cannot risk 99% of your lifestyle” says Karan. “The idea of fitness is not just 6-pack abs, you need to aim for an overall healthy lifestyle so that your body looks fit” concludes Karan.

In an industry that only cares about results, Karan Oberoi is one of the few who refuses to go down the easier route. He hopes that he is able to bring awareness to those who are new to the fitness game that natural is the only way to go for long lasting fitness.
