New Delhi, Set 24 (IENews) India welcomed the the successful completion of Maldives election process.
“This election marks not only the triumph of democratic forces in the Maldives. But also reflects the firm commitment to the values of democracy & the rule of law,” the External Affairs Ministry said in a statement.
“India looks forward to working closely with the Maldives,” to further deepen its partnership in keeping with its ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy, said the statement.
The President of Maldives Abdulla Yameen on Monday conceded defeat in Sunday’s presidential election that was widely seen as a referendum on the island nation’s young democracy.
The Maldives Foreign Ministry said that Solih, the Maldivian Democratic Party leader, had won the majority of votes.
It said Solih received 134,616 votes, while incumbent President Abdulla Yameen Abdulla Gayoom, candidate of the Progressive Party of the Maldives, received 96,132 votes.
Official results will be announced within the next seven days, before September 30.
