India stresses on Asian cooperation to combat terrorism

New York, Sept 25 (UNI) India has stressed the need for a balanced, open and inclusive framework for Asian countries to interact and cooperate in addressing traditional and non-traditional security challenges in the region.

Addressing a special meeting of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA), Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale on Monday referred to the shift in global power, change in the world economy and disruptions by technology, and the Asian region is not isolated from these challenges. Terrorism, he sadid, continues to cast a long shadow on development and economic prosperity, and it has grown more lethal and adept at the use of technology.

“We need to strengthen our cooperation in combating international terrorism at the regional and global fora,” Gokhale said.

He said India will work towards enhancing cooperation and strengthening peace, security and development in the Asian region.

Outgoing CICA chair China said it has made efforts in building the CICA a security cooperation mechanism that has the widest coverage, largest membership and most representation in Asia, and the forum has played an important and constructive role in promoting regional stability and prosperity.

Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that said the forum should enhance sustained peace and security, win-win development, innovative transformation, and inclusive partnership in the future.

All the CICA members shall confront resolutely against unilateralism, protectionism and hegemony, in a bid to promote fairer multilateralism and build a new type of international relations, Wang said, calling on the CICA members continuously building political trust.

The 26-member regional security forum was established in 1992 as a forum for dialogue and consultation on security issues in Asia. It also includes other countries and international organizations as observers.

Tajikistan is the new chair of CICA.
