Gross violation of human rights in Sabarimala: Kerala Human Rights Commission

Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 18 (IECurrentAffairs) There is gross human rights violations at Nilakkal, Pamba and Sabarimala Sannidhanam, according to Kerala Human Rights Commission here on Sunday.

The Ayyappa devotees, who throng the hill shrine during this season are denied all basic amenities, Commission member P Mohanadas said in a press statement.

The toilet facilities are so poor that human faecus are now flowing in Pamba river making it more filthy causing severe health hazard to the devotees and others.

The devotees are denied water in toilets forcing the devotees to make pampa river filthy.

The police officials on duty are also denied basic facilities as per press and media reports today.Various devotees from outside state are also coming at Chengannur railway station to proceed to Sabarimala.

The officials of local panchayat at Chengannur, Nilackal and officials of Travancoor Devaswam Board are turning blind eye to these naked human rights violations, even after being alerted from different corners.

“Hence I hereby direct the TDB Commissioner, Secretary LSGD, Kerala DGP to intervene in the matter urgently and to do whatever is possible to alleviate the grievances of ayyappa devotees,” the commission directed.

“They shall file a report within two weeks. The prayer of complainant for visit of the respective areas is deferred for the time being.”

In view of recent strikes and other untoward incidents alleged to have taken place in Sabarimala and its premises by certain factions of political parties and Ayyappa devotees, and continuing agitations pursuant to that I am of the view that a visit and inspection at this juncture of the places will be an unwelcome step.

“That apart, a decision in this matter will be taken only after consultations with the honourable member in charge of Pathanamthitta district. Put up the reports during camp sitting at Kozhikode,” the Commission said.
