Govt working for regulation of removal, transplant of human organs

New Delhi, Dec 22 (IECurrentAffairs) The Government has enacted the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act, 1994 and made rules for regulation of removal, storage and transplantation of human organs and tissues for therapeutic purposes.

The exact data regarding demand for human organs in the country and the availability of the same, state, UT wise is not available though, official sources said here.

Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO) is a Central Public Sector Enterprise(CPSE) under the administrative control of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.

It manufactures prosthetics for distribution amongst persons with disabilities free of cost according to need of the beneficiaries under Assistance to Disabled Persons for purchase or fitting of Aids and Appliances scheme of the Centre.

As informed by Rehabilitation Council of India, the Council gives approval to the institutions for running courses in the area of Prosthetics and Orthotics in the country. There are 17 institutes approved by the council which are running master, bachelor, diploma courses in Prosthetics and Orthotics, they added.
