Five blasts rock Assam on Republic Day

Guwahati, Jan 26 (IECurrentAffairs) Altogether five low-intensity blasts hit parts of eastern Assam early morning as the state joined the country in celebrating Republic Day today.
While three blasts were reported from Dibrugarh district, one each has been reported from Charaideo and Tinsukia districts. No person was injured in any of the blasts.
One of the blast sites in Dibrugarh district was on national highway 37, which was on the route to the main Republic Day celebration ground and dignitaries, including ministers, were scheduled to pass through the spot a few minutes after the explosion.
Police and paramilitary forces have rushed to the spots to ascertain the extent of damage and nature of explosives used.
Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, condemning the blasts, said the culprits will be identified and brought to book. He has also instructed the director-general of police to find the perpetrators at the earliest.
The involvement of the banned ULFA (I) is suspected behind the blasts as the outfit had called for a boycott of the Republic Day celebration and also a general strike from 12 midnight to 1800 hours today.
