New Delhi, Sep 26 (IENews) In an attempt to play to the galleries and position itself as a non-corrupt party, Congress on Tuesday said it would support a legislation to keep criminals out of politics.
It, however, expressed doubts about the intention of the government to bring such a law.
Speaking to IENews along with other media in the capital, AICC spokesperson Kapil Sibal said, “As far as the criminality and politics is concerned those elements who have criminal background or all those elements who have escaped criminal prosecution should not be in politics. If this Government brings a Legislation to ensure that criminals are out of politics, we will support it.”
”This government will never bring such a law. For, if it does so, it’s strength will be reduced from 282 to 182. This is why they have not appointed a lokpal till now,” he said.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the legislature to consider framing law to ensure decriminalisation of politics.
