Chandigarh, Oct 17 (IENews) Bishop Franco Mulakkal accused in a rape of nun received a ‘hero’s’ welcome back home in Jalandhar when he was released on conditional bail.
His supporters, mainly people of the Christian faith showered the accused rapist with garlands and rose petals.
Bishop Franco Mulakkal is the first bishop of the Catholic Church in India to be arrested on accusations of rape on September 21.
The arrest of the Bishop reportedly brought immense shame to the people of the Catholic Church, which is currently is worst crisis over the growing numbers of sexual abuse cases of the clergy globally.
While directing bail, Kerala high court has directed the accused rapist to surrender his passport and not enter Kerala except for appearing before the probe officer.
Globally, Christians are fighting for justice for sexual abuse victims, but in India, the leaders of the Catholic Church and many of the people of Christian faith preferred to maintain silence on the rape, sodomy and confinement of the nun.
