10 per cent reservation Bill for general category passed in Rajya Sabha

New Delhi: After the Lok Sabha, the 124th Constitution Amendment Bill, 2019 to award 10 per cent reservation to economically weaker sections was passed with majority in Rajya Sabha today.

After 10-hour long debate, most of the members in the Upper House of the Parliament agreed to go ahead with the bill despite opposition from some parties.

Earlier in the day, appealing to members of Rajya Sabha to support the Constitution (124th) Amendment Bill 2019 to pave the way for 10 per cent reservation for economically weaker sections of the society, Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Thawar Chand Gehlot said it was a ‘historic Bill, brought with good policy and intention’.

After 10 hours of discussion, majority parties including the Congress, expressed their backing for the Bill that aims to amend Articles 15 and 16 of the Constitution, which at present provides only for up to 50 per cent reservation for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes.
